Cornwall Travel Guide: Stay, Eat, and Explore

Whether you live in the UK, or you are visiting Cornwall must be on your list. Yes it might be far out from London or other parts of the country, however, it is worth the travel.

Cornwall boasts a gorgeous coastline which boasts amazing views & surf. I lived in Cornwall for about 6 years down south in St Ives, but have explored up and down the county. Cornwall is great for a road trip or just spending a week in one place relaxing.

Now where to stay? Read the list below to get some inspiration.

North of Cornwall

Polzeath

I have been to more than just 1 place in the North of Cornwall but I need to go back and grab some more pictures to add to this list. One of my absolute favourites – I mean all are my favourites is Polzeath. Located around 6 miles from Wadebridge is a small village with a fantastic beach.

It is very small but perfect for an escape where you can just stay and relax for a week. There is a caravan park right opposite the beach where you can stay but there are also homes you can rent for anything from 2-10 people and more. WE stayed in this gorgeous house just up a small but mighty hill where the lounge had views of the sea. Grab an Asda (or any other food shop) and get the fridge full.

The main things to do in Polzeath is to grab a board (surfboard or bodyboard) and get in the sea. It does get rough sometimes, so only go in when the red and yellow flags are up. There are lovely cafes and restaurants nearby too if you want to grab something to eat. There are plenty of walks to be had, including a walk to Rock. Make sure to bring your hiking boots.

South of Cornwall

St Ives

Easily one of the most iconic places in the South of Cornwall is St Ives. It is known for many things, including its lush beaches and art. The harbour boasts cute boats, crazy seagulls but a beautiful view of the sea.

Take some time to wander around the local independent stores & grab a drink in one of the many bars. The good thing about St Ives is that it is well connected to nearby villages and towns. You are not far from the cinema, bowling and more. You also must grab a pasty from one of the local bakeries – oh and a scone.

When looking at places to stay, you will find that it can be expensive especially during peak season. Booking in advance is advised. There are lots of options to choose from including hotels to B&Bs.

Lelant

I will say that I am biased with this one because I used to live in Lelant. It is a small village situated a few miles outside of St Ives & next to Carbis Bay. If you want to stay away from the hustle and bustle, I recommend staying at Lelant. There is good transport to St Ives & Carbis Bay. There are lots of holiday lets available in the village & also camping spots too if your feeling adventurous.

Due to it being a small village there isn’t a lot to do but thats perfect if you just want to chill – and you can get a bus to places to do activities. However, there is a gorgeous beach called Porth Kidney Sands – you have to walk through a golf course to get there but it’s amazing. Great for a swim too as its usually calm. Pack food and drink as there isn’t a shop nearby. From the beach there is also access to a coastal path.

If you are looking for somewhere to eat, there are two pubs – The Watermill (I used to work here) and Badger Inn. Both do classic pub grub with iconic Cornish beer.

Penzance

Penzance is another lovely place to visit if you are going for a day on your Cornish road trip or you are staying on the outskirts. There are plenty of hotels, Airbnbs and B&Bs to stay in during your time in Cornwall.

Visiting Penzance is great if you want a walk around the shops and to visit local and independent places. My favourite thing to do in Penzance is to go to the Jubilee Pool. It has a geothermal warm pool next to a cold one and is such an experience. You get an hour for £11 and its so worth it – try a dip in the cold pool for something crazy. After you can go to the cafe for a bite to eat or something to eat.

Truro

Truro is perfect if you are looking for some shopping in the midst of Cornish pasties and beach days. It is a beautiful spot, with local shops and a cathedral. You can stay within Truro in hotels and Airbnbs, but it is close enough to visit for a day trip from St Ives and other places nearby to the town.

In terms of things to do, I mean, the most obvious one is to shop. There are so many independent but also regional shops here to visit, including clothes & jewellery. There are lots of local restaurants which have a strong prescence in Truro. I recommend visiting Uneeka and The Mockingbird Mimosa for some cocktails.

Looe

Looe is so so so so so gorgeous. It is the quaintess place in Cornwall in my opinion – and there are a lot of them. Similarly across the rest of the UK, there are lots of places to stay including hotels and cottages. We stayed in a family friends cottage which is super lovely.

Once you get into Looe, you have plenty of places to visit within the harbour. You will find lots of people crabbing there, just watch out for the seagulls because they are looking for crabs to eat. There is a fantastic Greek restaurant which was open a bit later called Yamas which has such amazing food – highly recommend you visit.

Polperro

Not far from Looe is Polperro, another gorgeous place with a harbour in it. It has the most amazing selection of pasty shops so you are guaranteed a place to eat. There is also a walks you can do from Polperro – just take the right path because my boyfriend nearly make us walk up a super steep hill.

If you do anything, you need to go to a pub with a rooftop bar. It is absolutely amazing with views for day. As well as drinks, they do amazing pub grub which smelled lush. I had a Tarquins gin and tonic. The pub is called The Three Pilchards.

Cornwall is a fantastic county to visit in England and I recommend everyone to go. It is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle, and settle down for a week or two.

This list gets updated every time I go to Cornwall, so expect to see this list grow!
